The Buena Vista Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is located at 2000 Magnolia Ave in Buena Vista, separate from the Circuit Court in Lexington. This court handles child custody, visitation, child support, paternity, and protective order cases for Buena Vista residents. It does not handle divorce; that goes to the Circuit Court in Lexington.

The J&DR Court's authority comes from Chapter 11 of Title 16.1. Child Custody in Buena Vista

Custody decisions for Buena Vista families follow the best interests of the child standard in § 20-124.2 and § 20-124.3. Virginia does not favor either parent. Courts evaluate all ten statutory factors, including the child's age and condition, each parent's involvement in the child's care, the child's relationships with siblings, each parent's willingness to support the other parent's bond with the child, and any history of family abuse. The child's own preference matters if the child is old enough to form a thoughtful view.

Section 20-124.4 requires courts to send parents to dispute resolution orientation before a contested custody case goes to trial. Mediation helps many families reach agreements without a hearing. Agreements that serve the child's interests are entered as court orders. A parent planning to move with the child must give 30 days' written notice under § 20-124.5. The other parent may go to court to object.

Virginia Child Support Enforcement Services

The Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCSE) serves Buena Vista residents with help establishing and collecting child support. DCSE can establish paternity, issue administrative support orders under § 63.2-1903, and enforce orders through wage withholding, tax intercepts, and license suspensions. Services are free or low-cost and open to all parents regardless of income. Interstate cases follow UIFSA in Chapter 5.3 of Title 20.

Court records are retained for at least 20 years from the final order under § 17.1-213. Older divorce and support files remain accessible at the clerk's offices in Lexington and Buena Vista long after the cases closed.

Marriage and divorce records for Buena Vista residents are also on file with the Virginia Department of Health Vital Records office in Richmond.
